If you’re over 65 or simply notice a problem with our eyes – go see your Optometrist. That’s the message from a new report commissioned by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). The report says two in five people over 65 have experienced symptoms like photophobia and black spots, but fail to get their eyes tested.
The survey also found that just over a third of people aged over 65 who did not go for regular sight tests believed their spectacles or contact lenses were appropriate. Other common reasons that over-65s do not attend regular eye examinations include worries about the cost of spectacles and time constraints. Worryingly, others were sure that their eyes were fine.
RNIB director of engagement, Fazilet Hadi, highlighted that: “All too often people think of deteriorating vision as an inevitable sign of ageing, and don’t seek professional advice when they’re experiencing problems with their vision or their eyes.”
The survey did also find that in the most recent sight test for this age group, over half of all eye examinations resulted in a change in prescription or a referral to the doctor.
Optometrist at Benjamins Diane Hunt explains how important a regular eye examination is, particularly for older people: “A regular check is vital for the continued health of your sight. As we get older many people simply put up with conditions which may well be treatable and would then give them improved vision and a much better quality of life. Of course, it is important for people of all ages to have a regular check-up so that we can look for any change. We use equipment such as our OCT scanner which can look deep behind the back of your eye and pick up signs of problems before they are apparent and which can then be treated accordingly.”
